2022
American Tower joins the United Nations Global Compact and adopts the United Nations Women’s Empowerment Principles, demonstrating the Company’s unwavering responsibility to a principles-based approach to corporate sustainability that upholds a commitment to people and the planet.
2021
American Tower acquires CoreSite Realty Corporation, adding over 20 highly interconnected data center facilities and cloud onramps in eight U.S. markets.
American Tower adds approximately 31,000 communications sites to its portfolios in Latin America and Europe and launches operations in Spain, as part of its Telxius transaction. The Company also expands its presence in Asia-Pacific by launching operations in the Philippines and Bangladesh.
American Tower adopts science-based targets (SBTs), which are approved by the Science Based Targets initiative and in line with the global greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals set forth in the 2015 Paris Agreement. The establishment of SBTs across its global operations and supply chain reflect the Company’s dedication to advancing its sustainability program.
2020
The American Tower Board of Directors names Tom Bartlett President and Chief Executive Officer, effective March 16. Previously, Mr. Bartlett served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for American Tower for more than ten years, joining the Company from Verizon Communications, Inc.
American Tower acquires InSite Wireless Group, LLC , adding approximately 3,000 communication sites, primarily in the U.S. and Canada. Through this acquisition, American Tower launches operations in Canada and Australia.
2019
American Tower acquires Eaton Towers Holdings Limited, adding approximately 5,800 sites to its African portfolio, acquires approximately 2,400 sites in Chile and Peru and constructs more than 4,500 sites globally.
American Tower named to the Forbes list of America’s Best Mid-Size Employers and America's Best Employers for Diversity.
2018
American Tower launches operations in Kenya with the acquisition of over 700 towers from Telkom Kenya. Additionally, the Company adds close to 20,000 sites in India from transactions with Idea Cellular and Vodafone India.
Jim Taiclet and American Tower are recognized for the company’s tremendous growth and success during his tenure as CEO with EY's Entrepreneur of the Year award, and American Tower named to the Forbes list of America’s Best Mid-Size Employers.
2017
American Tower named to Fortune magazine’s Fortune 500 for the first time in the Company's history. The Fortune 500 is a prestigious annual ranking of the largest U.S. corporations by total revenue and includes both public and privately held companies.
2016
American Tower acquires a 51 percent controlling ownership interest in Viom Networks Limited, along with over 42,000 communications sites in India, contributing to our global portfolio.
American Tower establishes its global treasury center in the Netherlands, headquartered in Amsterdam, to ensure secure and timely access to capital in support of its continued international growth.
The Company also expands its presence to Argentina with the acquisition of a portfolio of urban telecommunications assets in the country.
The National Association of Corporate Directors, New England Chapter, named our Board as the “2016 Public Company Board of the Year.”
2011 to 2015
2015
American Tower acquires the exclusive right to 11,448 wireless communications sites from Verizon Communications, Inc., increasing the U.S. tower count to approximately 40,000.
The Company also continues developing internationally, launching operations in Nigeria and reaching the milestone of 100,000 towers in our global portfolio.
2014
American Tower CEO Jim Taiclet is recognized for the third time (2011, 2013 and 2014) by the Harvard Business Review as one of the 100 top-performing CEOs in the world.
2013
American Tower acquires Global Tower Partners, the largest privately owned tower operator in the U.S. This increased U.S. owned sites by over 20 percent and also added Costa Rica to the Company's served markets.
2012
American Tower becomes a Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) and begins paying regular dividend distributions to stockholders.
The Company reaches the historic milestone of 50,000 communications sites and launches operations in Uganda and Germany.
2011
American Tower announces its intentions to become a REIT. The Company also expands in South Africa and Ghana.
2006 to 2010
2010
American Tower grows substantially, launching operations in Peru, Chile and Colombia. Additionally, the Company acquires Essar Telecom Infrastructure in India, adding approximately 4,450 wireless tower sites to its portfolio and marking the third major transaction in India. The Company also joins the Bloomberg Businessweek 50.
2009
American Tower acquires XCEL, an Indian company that owns and operates approximately 1,700 tower sites. In the U.S. the Company focuses its efforts on enhancing operations and customer service.
2007
American Tower joins the S&P 500 and opens its first office outside of the Americas in New Delhi, India.
2001 to 2005
2005
American Tower merges with one of its closest competitors, SpectraSite, Inc., creating the largest tower company in the United States.
2002
American Tower shifts operational focus from acquiring and developing towers to improving operations. This leads to the sale of the American Tower ancillary businesses in 2003 and the sale of the construction services unit in 2004.
1995 to 2000

Growth and acquisition remains the main business focus and American Tower continues to grow quickly, launching operations in Brazil.
1999
American Tower launches operations in Mexico and becomes Mexico’s largest independent tower operator with more than 3,000 sites.
1998
American Tower parent company – American Radio – is sold to CBS/Viacom and American Tower is spun off into a separate company. The Company goes public under the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) as AMT.
1995
American Tower starts off as a subsidiary of American Radio and begins to grow through acquisitions.
